Welcome to the Islamic Cultural Center

Serving the West African Muslim community of the Bronx since 1999 — our story, our programs and our journey to rebuild.

    إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ

“The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day.” — Surah At-Tawbah 9:18

    Our story

From living rooms to a masjid of our own

The Islamic Cultural Center was established in 1999, more than 25 years ago, to fulfill the religious obligations of the West African Muslims in the county of the Bronx. This immigrant group only started coming here in significant numbers in the mid-eighties. Before we bought the center, we all used to pray in our homes, or in Guyanese, Pakistani and Bangladeshi Masjids if you lived close by any. There were very few Masjids in the Bronx.

We started getting concentrated in the Bronx in the late eighties and early nineties. By this time, we had a handful of elders with Islamic knowledge. These people started to organize Dhikr sessions to remind us of our Deen. If any one of us had a religious ceremony such as a naming ceremony, marriage ceremony or burial ceremony, or received a message of a loved one's death from back home, these individuals stood up and gathered the community to preside over the event.

As the community grew larger, we decided to get a center where we could fulfill all our religious and social obligations. We rented an apartment on the ground floor of a building on Jessup Avenue for a few years, which was called Masjid Deyau. A few years later, as the community kept growing, we decided to get a bigger place. Some of our brothers inspired us to buy a place that we could call our own. We found and bought an old building, which we renovated ourselves with the help of our whole community. At this time, the Islamic Cultural Center was born.

    September 17, 2009

On the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the two biggest holidays in the Islamic calendar, the Islamic Cultural Center was tragically consumed by fire. Thereafter it was declared unsafe by the NYC Building Department and had to be demolished.

The Islamic Cultural Center has played a significant role in the lives of the Muslims of Bronx County. If we are not able to continue the programs and services mentioned above, for whatever reason, it will have a serious impact on the community at large. This is why we are kindly appealing to all Muslims to lend a hand in our efforts to rebuild our center.

    The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said

“Whoever builds a Masjid for the sake of Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Jannah (Paradise).”

    Rebuilding our center

Our vision for the new Islamic Cultural Center

A Muslim brother who is an engineer has offered his expertise pro bono — may Allah reward him. Together we planned a six-floor center that includes an Islamic school.

    24,000

    sq. ft. full vision

    $3.6M – $4M

    full project estimate

    12,000

    sq. ft. in Phase One

    $800,000

    raised so far, alhamdulillah

    • Floors 1 – 2The Masjid
    • Floors 3 – 4Islamic school & library
    • Floors 5 – 6Living spaces
    • BasementKitchen & food pantry for Iftar and other occasions

This is a very ambitious goal, but after a series of consultations amongst the leaders and members of our community, we decided to divide the project into two phases, which will be more realistic and achievable.

Phase One is a 12,000 sq. ft. space. The Masjid will occupy the first and second floors; the third floor will house the Islamic school, library and offices to continue our counseling services. The first phase is estimated to cost $1.8 million.

Thanks to Allah, we have so far raised $800,000.00 and we still need to raise $2.2 million. By the Will of Allah, we hope to raise this amount in about a year. We will keep you all updated as the project progresses.

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains.”

    Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261
